CHAPTER 13

While sitting in the grass, Phatty took a look around Central Park. It was so much more beautiful than he had ever imagined. Not only were there dogs being walked with their humans, but Phatty actually saw a pair of horses and riders trotting toward the bridle path that led farther into the woods. It wasn’t scary; it was peaceful, with all the kids playing and having fun. Now if only one of those kids would share some food!

At that moment, Phatty was no longer a scared cat; he felt confident that his expedition was going to be a success. Thinking back to his new friend, he smiled and even chuckled as he pictured Rackie cleaning her teeth with her feet. Oh, the stories he would have to tell Payaso and his brothers! They would never believe what he had already seen—and already accomplished. After a few deep breaths, Phatty was ready to continue walking farther into the park.

Phatty walked around the baseball field, passed the carousel, and took a left at the Mall, the park’s widest walkway. It was surrounded by a canopy of the tallest elm trees in America. As Phatty walked past the century-old sculptures of poets like William Shakespeare flanking the walkway, he was reminded of the beautiful poetry Payaso had read to him over the years. He cherished every moment, inspired by the poets.

Before long, Phatty saw a sign for the zoo. He was heading in the right direction! He laughed as he imagined all of the mismatched friends who lived together at the zoo. It seemed like at the zoo, you could be different and still fit in. How could a place like that be bad?

Excited that he was getting close to the zoo, Phatty reminded himself to leave a message for his friends. Getting out his magic stick, he found a clean large rock that was next to his favorite poet, and he began to write his friends a message filled with a poem and a sketch that they couldn’t miss. He giggled as he drew, wondering if Payaso would even understand it—and more importantly, would they even look for it? Well, I will later if I need it. Like Rackie had said, he could use his drawings to find his own way home.

Phatty finished his message, and he continued down the path for what felt like forever to his short legs. The more he walked, the more tired he became. He was in need of a five-minute rest when he saw a beautiful pond only a few yards ahead of him. He paused and took in the serene setting, amazed by the beauty. Tall grasses waved in the breeze near the water. Lilies floated on the water. He was in awe as he watched all the people in rowboats soaking up the sun, enjoying their time in nature. He was surrounded by couples having picnics in the grass.

Phatty needed to take a break. Just a few minutes of rest would help the dull ache he felt all over.
